1.    Ungulate (Mammals  Division)

[Science]

Quoted from Wikipedia - Ungulate

Perissodactyla and Artiodactyla comprise the largest portion of ungulates, and also include the majority of large land mammals. These two groups first appeared during the late Paleocene and early Eocene (about 54 million years ago), rapidly spreading to a wide variety of species on numerous continents, and have developed in parallel since that time.[1]

Quoted from: Exploring Family Tree - Uncovering ungulate taxonomy

All ungulates are mammals (Class Mammalia) - a group of warm-blooded (endothermic) animals with backbones. Taxonomically, mammals are animals (Kingdom Animalia) and belong to the Phylum Chordata, Subphylum Vertebrata. Mammals can be distinguished from other animals by the presence of milk-producing skin glands - these mammary glands, for which the Class Mammalia is named, are found in every mammal and nowhere else in the Animal Kingdom. Many other characters are used to diagnose mammals, including the presence of hair, three middle ear bones, and a four-chambered heart.

The easiest way to distinguish the two types of ungulates is to look at their feet (and hooves): Perissodactyls (generally) have an odd number of toes on each foot, while "artiodactyls" (the ungulates within Cetartiodactyla) usually possess an even number of toes on each foot. Despite the even-odd differentiation, there are exceptions to the rule: for instance, both tapirs (Perissodactyla: Tapiridae) and some peccaries (Cetartiodactyla: Tayassuidae) have four toes (and hooves) on their front feet, and three on the rear. [2]

[Quran]

From the above study, we understand that all the Mammals which are used by Human and called domestic animals, fall into 2 main groups:
  • Perissodactyla: that includes the horses, asses, mules.
  • Cetratiodactyla: that includes animals that provide milk, meat, and clothing, such as: Cows, Goats, Sheep, and Camels.
This division between 2 main types of Domestic Animals used by Humans is clearly mentioned in many verses in Quran, where ALLAH separates between 2 groups: one for riding and one for eating and warming, as in the following verses:

اللَّهُ الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الأَنْعَامَ لِتَرْكَبُوا مِنْهَا وَمِنْهَا تَأْكُلُونَ (79) وَلَكُمْ فِيهَا مَنَافِعُ وَلِتَبْلُغُوا عَلَيْهَا حَاجَةً فِي صُدُورِكُمْ وَعَلَيْهَا وَعَلَى الْفُلْكِ تُحْمَلُونَ (80)

Allâh, it is He Who has made cattle for you, that you may ride on some of them and of some you eat. (79) And you have (many other) benefits from them, and that you may reach by their means a desire that is in your breasts (i.e. carry your goods, loads, etc.), and on them and on ships you are carried. (40:79-80)

Do they not see that We have created for them of what Our Hands have created, the cattle, so that they are their owners. (71) And We have subdued them unto them so that some of them they have for riding and some they eat. (72) And they have (other) benefits from them, and they get (milk) to drink, will they not then be grateful? (36:71-73)

Today, we now that this division means 2 main separate families in Mammals that technically named as Perissodactyla and Cetratiodactyla.

2.    Cattle Creation

[Science]

Quoted from: Cattle genetic variation & evolution

To understand the biology and evolution of ruminants, the cattle genome was sequenced to about sevenfold coverage. The cattle genome contains a minimum of 22,000 genes, with a core set of 14,345 orthologs shared among seven mammalian species of which 1217 are absent or undetected in noneutherian (marsupial or monotreme) genomes. Cattle-specific evolutionary breakpoint regions in chromosomes have a higher density of segmental duplications, enrichment of repetitive elements, and species-specific variations in genes associated with lactation and immune responsiveness. Genes involved in metabolism are generally highly conserved, although five metabolic genes are deleted or extensively diverged from their human orthologs. The cattle genome sequence thus provides a resource for understanding mammalian evolution and accelerating livestock genetic improvement for milk and meat production. [3]

Quoted from: Cow Genes Elucidate Evolution

David Lynn, a postdoctoral research associate in SFU associate professor Fiona Brinkman’s lab, led the analysis of adaptive evolution in the bovine genome. The team discovered that 70 of the cow’s 22,000 genes evolved more rapidly than expected.
Ten of these genes control immune functions; the rest govern a number of biological processes, including milk production.

Scientists have long believed that organisms’ immune-related efforts to overcome infectious diseases have led to adaptive evolution,” explains Lynn, an Irish born geneticist. “Our research helps cement the theory that genes governing the immune system actually evolve more rapidly than other genes to help ensure a species’ survival.”

Lynn predicts that as analysis procedures improve, scientists may discover even more genes that have been subject to adaptive evolution. “This is a start,” observes Lynn, “and informs scientists about which genes are most likely involved in increasing and diminishing cattle’s disease susceptibility. [4]

[Quran]

Following to above studies and many other papers, scientists are trying to study the evolution of cattle that caused the change in their genes, and the ability to produce milk.

We mentioned before in part A, that ALLAH planned for animals creation and scattered all their types from drop of water, which means “Animal evolution”, but there are certain verses in Quran that clearly state that there are 4 types of Animals which were NOT evolved as other animals but created in heaven (like Adam and Eve) and descended to Earth to be used by Humans.
These verses are the following:

He created you (all) from a single person (Adam); then made from him his wife [Hawwa' (Eve)]. And He has sent down for you of cattle eight pairs (of the sheep, two, male and female; of the goats, two, male and female; of the oxen, two, male and female; and of the camels, two, male and female). He creates you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation in three veils of darkness, such is Allâh your Lord. His is the kingdom, Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). How then are you turned away? (6)

[They are] eight mates - of the sheep, two and of the goats, two. Say, "Is it the two males He has forbidden or the two females or that which the wombs of the two females contain? Inform me with knowledge, if you should be truthful." (143)
And of the camels, two and of the cattle, two. Say, "Is it the two males He has forbidden or the two females or that which the wombs of the two females contain? Or were you witnesses when Allah charged you with this? Then who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allah to mislead the people by [something] other than knowledge? Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people." [6:144]

Therefore, these 8 pairs are:
  • 2 x Pairs of Cattle (cow)
  • 2 x Pairs of Sheep
  • 2 x Pairs of Goat
  • 2 x Pairs of Camel
This information may help scientists to understand why cattle gene is different than other Mammals and how it contains such special changes to produce Milk, meat and Clothing (wool, hair).

3.    Cattle Domestication

Quoted from Wikipedia - Aurochs

The aurochs (play /ˈaʊrɒks/ or /ˈɔrɒks/; also urus, Bos primigenius), the ancestor of domestic cattle, was a type of large wild cattle which inhabited Europe, Asia and North Africa, but is now extinct; it survived in Europe until 1627.

Aurochs bulls are believed to have reached a height of 1.8 meters (5 feet 10 inches) at the withers, and the cows to have been about 1.5 meters (4 feet 11 inches), displaying considerable sexual dimorphism.

The aurochs was regarded as a challenging hunting quarry animal, contributing to its extinction. The last recorded aurochs, a female, died in 1627 in the Jaktorów Forest, Poland, and her skull is now the property of the Livrustkammaren ("Royal Armory") museum in Stockholm, Sweden. [5]

Quoted from Wikipedia - Horse

Wild species surviving into modern times

A truly wild horse is a species or subspecies with no ancestors that were ever domesticated. Therefore, most "wild" horses today are actually feral horses, animals that escaped or were turned loose from domestic herds and the descendants of those animals. Only two never-domesticated subspecies, the Tarpan and the Przewalski's Horse, survived into recorded history.

Domestication

Domestication of the horse most likely took place in central Asia prior to 3500 BC. Two major sources of information are used to determine where and when the horse was first domesticated and how the domesticated horse spread around the world. The first source is based on palaeological and archaeological discoveries, the second source is a comparison of DNA obtained from modern horses to that from bones and teeth of ancient horse remains. [6]

[Quran]

The following verse has indication that both cattle types were wild the time that they were created:

Do they not see that We have created for them of what Our Hands have created, the cattle, so that they are their owners. (71) And We have subdued them unto them so that some of them they have for riding and some they eat. (72) And they have (other) benefits from them, and they get (milk) to drink, will they not then be grateful? (36:71-73)

This means that by ALLAH mercy to his servants, they were able to become domestic animals and able to serve the Mankind, which may indicate that some time was needed on Earth to pacify these animals from being wild animals.

4.     Cattle Coloring

[Science]

Quoted from Wikipedia - Cattle genome

In the April 24, 2009 edition of the journal Science, it was reported that a team of researchers led by the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Agriculture has mapped the bovine genome. The scientists found that cattle have approximately 22,000 genes, and 80% of their genes are shared with humans, and they have approximately 1,000 genes they share with dogs and rodents, but are not found in humans. Using this bovine "HapMap", researchers can track the differences between the breeds that affect the quality of meat and milk yields. [7]

[Quran]

According to the above 80% of cattle DNA are shared with “humans”, and because of that, this may explain the common colors between “Humans” and cattle (Cow, goat, sheep, Horse, Camel) that have similar colors like Humans: black, white and brown, which is shown in the following miraculous verse:

ومن الناس والدواب والانعام مختلف الوانه كذلك انما يخشى الله من عباده العلماء ان الله عزيز غفور

And likewise of men and Ad-Dawâbb (moving (living) creatures, beasts), and cattle, of various colors. It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allâh. Verily, Allâh is All-Mighty, Oft-Forgiving. (35:28)

The following figure shows how the different colors of cattle and how it’s similar to different humans’ colors:

5.    Cattle for Riding

[Quran]

ALLAH says in the Quran:

And the cattle, He has created them for you; in them there is warmth (warm clothing), and numerous benefits, and of them you eat. (5) And wherein is beauty for you, when you bring them home in the evening, and as you lead them forth to pasture in the morning. (6) And they carry your loads to a land that you could not reach except with great trouble to yourselves. Truly, your Lord is full of Kindness, Most Merciful. (7) And (He has created) horses, mules and donkeys, for you to ride and as an adornment. And He creates (other) things of which you have no knowledge. [16:5-8]

By ALLAH’s mercy, that he created animals that can transport humans to places that can’t be reached without such animals, even till now with new cars and truck, still natural places that have no paved roads can’t be reached without animals (forests, deserts, mountains, etc..).
The division of animals mentioned in the above verse: horses, mules and donkeys, as if God had delivered 3 types of animals:
  • Donkeys: cheap, slow for poor people use.
  • Mules: bigger, stronger than donkeys and hard-worker.
  • Horses: faster and longer distance, more expensive, like horses
  • Lastly camels for longer voyages,
This division almost the same division used currently in the car industry: Compact, Intermediate, Compact Utility, and Fully Utility, as shown below:

6.    Cattle Benefits

Quoted from Wikipedia – Cattle, Economy:

Cattle today are the basis of a multi-billion dollar industry worldwide. The international trade in beef for 2000 was over $30 billion and represented only 23 percent of world beef production. (Clay 2004). The production of milk, which is also made into cheese, butter, yogurt, and other dairy products, is comparable in economic size to beef production and provides an important part of the food supply for many of the world's people. Cattle hides, used for leather to make shoes, couches and clothing, are another widespread product. Cattle remain broadly used as draft animals in many developing countries, such as India. [8]

Quoted from Wikipedia – Sheep, Economic Importance:

Sheepskin is likewise used for making clothes, footwear, rugs, and other products. Byproducts from the slaughter of sheep are also of value: sheep tallow can be used in candle and soap making, sheep bone and cartilage has been used to furnish carved items such as dice and buttons as well as rendered glue and gelatin. Sheep intestine can be formed into sausage casings, and lamb intestine has been formed into surgical sutures, as well as strings for musical instruments and tennis rackets. Sheep droppings, which are high in cellulose, have even been sterilized and mixed with traditional pulp materials to make paper. Of all sheep byproducts, perhaps the most valuable is lanolin: the water-proof, fatty substance found naturally in sheep's wool and used as a base for innumerable cosmetics and other products. [9]

[Quran]

As summary for the above benefits that can be taken from Cow, Sheep, Goats, even Camels are the following products:
  1. Dairy Products: milk, cheese, butter, yogurt, etc…
  2. Meat Products: all kind of meats.
  3. Warming Products: wool (goat or camel hair), clothes, rugs, etc…
  4. Leather Products: coats, clothes, furniture, shoes, etc…
  5. Others Products: candle, soap, cosmetics, surgical sutures, musical strings, glue, gelatin, etc…
ALLAH mentions all these benefits in addition to the traditional uses:
  • Drafting, transporting, packing, etc..
  • Tents (movable houses).
The following verses mentions: the Eating benefits (meat), Drinking (Dairy) and other benefits.

Do they not see that We have created for them of what Our Hands have created, the cattle, so that they are their owners. (71) And We have subdued them unto them so that some of them they have for riding and some they eat. (72) And they have (other) benefits from them, and they get (milk) to drink, will they not then be grateful? (36:71-73)

The warming (clothes), drafting, transporting, eating (meat):

And the cattle, He has created them for you; in them there is warmth (warm clothing), and numerous benefits, and of them you eat. (5) And wherein is beauty for you, when you bring them home in the evening, and as you lead them forth to pasture in the morning. (6) And they carry your loads to a land that you could not reach except with great trouble to yourselves. Truly, your Lord is full of Kindness, Most Merciful. (7) [16:5-7]

The eating (meat), Furniture:

ومن الانعام حمولة وفرشا كلوا مما رزقكم الله ولا تتبعوا خطوات الشيطان انه لكم عدو مبين

Among cattle (He has created) those fit for loading and those are Farsha (Mattress, furniture, fit for laying on the floor). Eat of what Allah has provided you, and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Surely, he is an open enemy to you. (6:142)

The Leather, tents, furnishing and goods:

And Allâh has made for you in your homes an abode, and made for you out of the hides of the cattle (tents for) dwelling, which you find so light (and handy) when you travel and when you stay (in your travels), and of their wool, fur, and hair (sheep wool, camel fur, and goat hair), a furnishings and articles of convenience (e.g. carpets, blankets), a comfort for a while. [16:80]

The Milk and too many other benefits:

وان لكم في الانعام لعبرة نسقيكم مما في بطونها ولكم فيها منافع كثيرة ومنها تاكلون

And Verily! In the cattle there is indeed a lesson for you. We give you to drink (milk) of that which is in their bellies. And there are, in them, numerous (other) benefits for you, and of them you eat. (23:21)

The following images show sample of these numerous benefits that ALLAH had created to us through these animals “Cattle”, and it’s only this type of animals that can produce such benefits among 3-30 million [10] of existing animal species all over the World !!

7.    Camel Creation

Camel is a unique animal among the Mammals group, let’s see why?

[Science]

Quoted from: Family Camelidae - Camels
  • Modern day camelids are the only living representatives of the suborder Tylopoda (from the Greek words tylo, meaning callous, and pous, genitive podos, meaning foot).
  • A unique wide pad of connective tissue on the base of the feet provides support on soft, sandy soils.
  • The position of this family within the order Cetartiodactyla was formerly confounded by the fact that camelids ruminate (regurgitate and rechew their food) - at was thus assumed that they were more closely related to the ruminants than the Suiformes. However, molecular evidence suggests that this feature evolved independently from the Ruminantia; the stomach of the Camelidae is only three-chambered.
  • The upper lip of all members of the Camelidae is split into two finger-like projections which aid in the collection of tough forage.
  • The dental formula is I 1/3, C 1/1, P 2-3/1-2, M 3/3 x 2 = 30-34.
  • There is no gall bladder.
  • Unique among mammals, the red blood cells of the Camelidae are oval in shape.
  • There is no connective skin between the hind legs and the belly, increasing the apparent length of the hind legs.
  • Camelids walk with a "pacing" gait, where both the front and hind legs on one side of the body are moved forward together. The result is that the body weight is shifted from one side to the other, creating a rocking motion - camels are thus often called "ships of the desert". [11]

Quoted from: Camelus dromedaries, Dromedary, Arabian camel
  • The ability of the camel to survive in desert conditions without water for long periods of time is rivaled by none. Dromedaries can glean much of their needed water from desert vegetation, and can survive after losing over 40 percent of their body weight in water.
  • When water is available, whether fresh or brackish (salty), camels drink well - up to 57 liters at a time.
  • Camels also have a flexible 'thermostat', and will not start sweating until their body temperature reaches 42oC / 107.5oF.
  • Nor do heating mechanisms kick in during the cooler nights until the internal temperature reaches 34oC / 92oF.
  • Besides saving energy, this physiological adaptation allows the camel to "store" coolness in preparation for the next day.
  • On hot days, dromedaries will rest together in closely packed groups, with reduces the heat reflecting off of the ground considerably.
  • Wild-type behavior has been studied mostly in Australia, where the animals are not influenced by people.
  • Groups are in no way territorial, and during droughts may join up with other groups, forming large herds of several hundred animals.  Large migrations may be undertaken by these groups in the search for water. [12]

[Quran]

Analyzing all the above features, it shows clearly that this creature was not developed from other animals and it’s unique by itself, whether physically or because its behavior and essential benefits for humans (i.e. traveling long distances).

The Camel is among the 4 types of Cattle that were created by ALLAH before they descended to Earth. ALLAH clearly asking us to study the creation of this animal particularly as if saying there is a clear evidence on “Creation” of this animal and NOT it’s been “Evolved” as other animals, ALLAH says:

افلا ينظرون الى الابل كيف خلقت
Do they not look at the camels, how they are created? (88:16)

8.    Cattle Milking

[Science]

Quoted from Yahoo Answers: Cow eats grass but how come they can produce milk?

Grass contains a mixture of ingredients that get recombined inside a cow to make a new mixture that we call milk. To get the nutrients from the grass the cow first has to swallow the grass, whole, into her first stomach – the rumen.
When the rumen is full the cow rests and regurgitates the grass back up, a mouthful at a time to chew it. The chewed grass gets swallowed into the cows second stomach – the reticulum – which also catches all the strange things a cow might swallow when eating grass.
From the reticulum the mashed up grass goes into the cows third stomach the Omasum, which breaks the grass down even more. Then it goes into the Abomasum, which works like our stomach – it adds acid to the grass to break it down until the bits are small enough to be absorbed into our bloodstream.
When the cow is pregnant its mammary glands get ready to make milk for its calf. The cows udder has mammary glands that collect the right mixture of ingredients from the cows blood and turn it into milk. [13]

Quoted from: How Is Milk Produced?
  1. Blood stream delivers nutrients to alveolus epithelial cells
  2. Using these nutrients, epithelial cells produce milk, which is then released inside the alveolus lumen.
  3. During milking, oxytocin is released in the blood stream, and induces contraction of the muscular cells covering the alveolus.
  4. This contraction on the alveolus, leads to milk ejection (milk let down), forcing the milk out to lactiferous ducts and the gland cistern. [14]

[Quran]

In the above explanation, we understand how Cow blood collects the nutrients from grass through processing it inside the 4 stomachs, and then injected it inside blood which goes into the udders to produce Milk.

This process is described in one verse only:

وان لكم في الانعام لعبرة نسقيكم مما في بطونه من بين فرث ودم لبنا خالصا سائغا للشاربين

And verily! In the cattle, there is a lesson for you. We give you to drink of that which is in their bellies, from between excretions [Farth] and blood, pure milk; palatable to the drinkers. (16:66)

The correct explanation for the word “Farth” is the food inside the stomach or intestines:

الفَرْثُ: السِّرْجينُ، ما دام في الكَرِشِ

Therefore, the verse describes that Milk comes from between the food inside the stomachs which is the nutrients, then through blood that transferred it to the udders, which matches perfectly the scientific explanation above.

Thanks to ALLAH, Lord of the Worlds.

  1. I will comment on one issue
in this post - the claim that 4 species were created for man's use.

    You say

    "Therefore, these 8 pairs are:

2 x Pairs of Cattle (cow)
    2 x Pairs of Sheep
    2 x Pairs of Goat
    2 x Pairs of Camel

"This information may help scientists to understand why cattle gene is different than other Mammals and how it contains such special changes to produce Milk, meat and Clothing (wool, hair)."

Mammals by definition produce milk and hair. It is definitional for mammals. Like all animals, invertebrate or vertebrate, mammals provide meat. Meat is simply the muscular tissue in all animals, from crab to whale to lamb. This includes 4,000 other species besides goats, cattle, sheep, and camel. Its possible to collect the milk in any of these species. Of course, only some of them yield practical amounts. The animals first domesticated in the Middle East happen to be those that lived in the area. In Tibet there is yak milk and butter, etc.

What is the fear that Christians and Muslims have that makes it difficult for them to approach evolution with an open mind? Very, very few of them make at serious effort to study evolution. I guarantee you it is difficult to get a good idea of it by going to Wikipedia. Its truly an amazing process, requiring a far more clever God than one who merely creates all these species out of nothing.

I will conclude by saying I am an agnostic. But I do not believe there MUST BE a conflict between evolution and the belief in God/Allah.

  2. First of all, I am very happy to receive your comment, especially from a scientist visiting my blog, Thanks

My Friend, maybe I missed a word that caused such misunderstanding, I know that there are other 4000 animals species which can produce meat, milk and clothing, but what I meant that Cattle can produce all these suitable for human use (i.e. easy, cheap, & healthy) ..

In other words, lions can produce milk to their young, but who has the courage to go and milk a female lion to get a cup of milk for his breakfast!!

Or who will go and slaughter an elephant to make a hamburger !!

Or who will raise alligators to make suits from their skin !!

These 8 pairs are created by God especially for our use, and being exist in this world they will pass with evolution process similar to other animals in the world and they will keep evolving too, as mentioned in the Quran above, that this is a continuous process.

Regarding the evolution process, which I admit it’s a wonderful and miraculous process, I would like to ask you to check my blog from time to time, as I am still working on study about the 2 methods of human evolution in Quran which I discovered. Hope you can visit later and read it…

Finally, About our beloved GOD, ALLAH, he is extremely extremely intelligent, he is the greatest of the greatest more than you can imagine, you will be very lucky if you just were able to know him, and I wish to invite to read my article about God comparison with named Gods (Jesus, Krishna, and Buda) on my other blog:

ALLAH is the only God who is Worthy to Worship, by Name, by Definition and by Attributes.

I hope that you will enjoy, inshalla.
